Girls Just Wanna Have Fun

Today, Lara and I went to the ear doctor. Not for Lara, of course, but for mommy. I have mild conductive hearing loss in my left ear, and the explanation I got consisted of words that are 23 letters long and that you would only ever see in long medical journals. So I have no idea why I have the hearing loss, but it shouldn't be permanent. Anyway, I took Lara with me, because I can do that. Lara is so well-behaved out of the house, and sure enough, she spent the entire appointment grinning with glee at everyone who so much as glanced in her direction.

Afterward, we picked up a few things at Wal-Mart. I thought about buying a little toy for Lara, but didn't see anything that I cared for. Lara didn't like leaving the toy aisle, and she made sure I knew it. If she spoke words, I know she would be saying, "Moooommmm!! WHY do you do this to me? Take me back! I will die if you don't take me back to the toys!!" She's very dramatic.

Lara continues to make big steps in her cognitive development, and I could spend forever listing all the new things she did this week. I realized that it's all so impressive to me because she is becoming such a big girl, and I think that I still see her as my little tiny baby I brought home from the hospital.

While the day progressed smoothly, the evening was rough. I don't know why, but Lara had separation anxiety quite a bit. I didn't deal with that too much when she was little, and I felt lucky. As such, I didn't realize how hard it can be. Every time I got up tonight, I found myself praying, "Please don't cry, don't cry." WWWWWAAAAHHHH MOMMY COME BACK OR I WILL DIE!!! It was really frustrating, especially since we've just entered into this new phase where I didn't have to help or supervise her play times. My cat was really driving me crazy also. He kept standing at all the closed doors and meowing endlessly. Because I didn't want him to wake Dustin, I spent a good hour getting really mad at Aidan and frustrated with Lara. I have to admit, I had a moment. I handled it by walking into the kitchen, turning on the faucet, put my hands over my ears, and hummed a tune. And I thought, "Ah, I have truly arrived to motherhood." So then I took a big breath and began my supper preparations.

That didn't go so well. Lara hasn't been a very good eater lately, partly because she is just too antsy tied to her seat now. I think she would like to eat and play at the very same time. It's also harder when she is not eating directly what's on my plate. She knows when she is not getting the grown-up food and it displeases her. Much of her food ended up all over the floor and I had to press her to eat what she usually really likes. I'm not too concerned about it. She still eats enough anyway. As you can see from this picture, Lara also has decided that this is how she prefers to wear her bibs now.

So I was feeling a tinsy bit overwhelmed after dinner until I heard Lara open a card we got her for her birthday that plays the song "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun." Deciding that was quite true, I finished my supper cleaning (mopping floors and scrubbing tables) then promptly turned on some Dance Dance Revolution! Lara and I spent the rest of the evening getting D and F ratings on our dancing skills. But it doesn't matter. What matters most, is that at the end of the day--us girls are just having fun.

Summer Start

Dustin and I planted tomato plants last night.  The evening was stunningly beautiful. Granted I had to put on a sweatshirt, but it was on...
