The Mystery of the Hyacinth

We spent a little bit of time outdoors this evening, enjoying the beautiful weather. After several minutes, Claire began to complain of feeling really itchy. She assumed it was bugs and asked for bug spray. About a minute later, I became very itchy as well. We started scratching at our faces, necks, ears...we eventually ran inside, thinking we would escape whatever was making us feel so itchy (we didn't see any bugs). We grabbed washcloths to wash down our faces when Claire suggested we take showers. While Claire was finishing up her shower, Lara ran inside in a panic, also feeling terribly itchy. She took a shower also. After several minutes, both girls felt a lot better, and I did too after I got in a shower.

It remained a mystery. The girls and I do not have allergies and do not show any common allergic reactions to the outside world (such as with a high pollen count). But after some research, I figured it out. Hyacinth bulbs. While Dustin plowed the ground, I handed the bulbs to Claire to plant. Gloveless. After we ran inside, Lara took up the task of planting them. Hyacinths have very strong toxins in the bulbs, and I had absolutely no clue of this. (I know nothing of flowers and gardening. Like, really. Nothing.) In fact, for some people, even wearing gloves does not help prevent an allergic reaction.

Well, now we know. But they are still so pretty.

Summer Start

Dustin and I planted tomato plants last night.  The evening was stunningly beautiful. Granted I had to put on a sweatshirt, but it was on...
